For twenty-five years, Positive Discipline has been the gold standard reference for grown-ups working with children. Now Jane Nelsen, distinguished psychologist, educator, and mother of seven, has written a revised and expanded edition. The key to positive discipline is not punishment, she tells us, but mutual respect. Nelsen coaches parents and teachers to be both firm and kind, so that any child from a three-year-old toddler to a rebellious teenager can learn creative cooperation and self-discipline with no loss of dignity. Inside youll discover how to:
bridge communication gaps
defuse power struggles
avoid the dangers of praise
enforce your message of love
build on strengths, not weaknesses
hold children accountable with their self-respect intact
teach children not what to think but how to think
win cooperation at home and at school
meet the special challenge of teen misbehavior

Positive Discipline
This book was recommended by a gal that encourages foster parenting. It has very good ideas, but like it says--try one thing @ a time to implement. I know lots of people who use this approachable are successful @ parenting happy children.

Great book!
I love the ideas in Positive Discipline. It presents a good way of thinking (getting inside the child's mind. Working on solutions, etc.) and a solid set of principals. I'm on my second read through it and I'm hoping to pick up some things I may have missed the first time.

Positive Discipline
When I worked as an elementary school counselor, this book was one I recommended most to parents. Having followed the positive discipline model myself with my own now grown children, I knew the model works. And i saw it work for the parents to whom I recommended it--what else is there to say? It is needed now more than ever as I see more and more parents struggle to be firm and consistent with their children. With this model, parents can learn to be firm and loving at the same time.

Thank You
I appreciate the skills this book is helping me to maintain in dealing with a spirited child. I always said, it is not what your saying, it is how you say it. This doesn't only apply to children!!!
