For twenty-five years, Positive Discipline has been the gold standard reference for grown-ups working with children. Now Jane Nelsen, distinguished psychologist, educator, and mother of seven, has written a revised and expanded edition. The key to positive discipline is not punishment, she tells us, but mutual respect. Nelsen coaches parents and teachers to be both firm and kind, so that any child from a three-year-old toddler to a rebellious teenager can learn creative cooperation and self-discipline with no loss of dignity. Inside youll discover how to:

bridge communication gaps

defuse power struggles

avoid the dangers of praise

enforce your message of love

build on strengths, not weaknesses

hold children accountable with their self-respect intact

teach children not what to think but how to think

win cooperation at home and at school

meet the special challenge of teen misbehavior

</isc:description>

<isc:description>This 2 hour lecture, by Dr. Jane Nelsen, was given on May 12th 2005
during the Butte County Dept. of Behavioral Health, Parent Conference,
in Chico, CA. Learn:

Why punishment is never appropriate for children of any age.

Why any kind of time-out is not appropriate for children under the age
of four, and how to create a positive time-out area with your four or
five-year-old that is encouraging, empowering, and teaches valuable life
skills.

How the brain develops, and why parents often expect things of their
children that are not developmentally or age appropriate -- such as
sharing, apologizing, and understanding "no" the way you think they do.

The three most important discipline tools to use with children under the age of three.

Many
other parenting tools that can be used with children under the age of
three -- and even more that can be used with four and five-year-olds.
How to get children to cooperate because they "want" to. How to help
your children develop the believe that, "I am capable, I can contribute
in meaningful ways, and I can use my power in useful ways.
</isc:description>

<isc:description>For twenty-five years, Positive Discipline has been the gold standard
reference for grown-ups working with children. Now Jane Nelsen,
distinguished psychologist, educator, and mother of seven, has written a
revised and expanded edition. The key to positive discipline is not
punishment, she tells us, but mutual respect. Nelsen coaches parents and
teachers to be both firm and kind, so that any child from a
three-year-old toddler to a rebellious teenager can learn creative
cooperation and self-discipline with no loss of dignity. Inside you'll
discover how to:

bridge communication gaps
defuse power struggles
avoid the dangers of praise
enforce your message of love
build on strengths, not weaknesses
hold children accountable with their self-respect intact
teach children not what to think but how to think
win cooperation at home and at school
meet the special challenge of teen misbehavior

The work involved to complete the answer sheet (14 questions) takes about 5 1/2 hours above and beyond listening to the DVD’s because it includes practicing some of the experiential activities and the Parents Helping Parents Problem-Solving Steps with friends. For California residents, 12 CEUs are available at the completion of the course. You may want to check to see if your organization will accept these CEUs—as some do.

Package #2 - $145.00 (Click Here) is for people who have already purchased the Teaching Parenting Manual—either as a hard copy or as an eBook. This package includes everything but the DVD's and allows the participant to become certified after completing the DVD Training.

Save airfare and hotel costs when you can't find a live training near you--and enjoy the workshop in the comfort of your own home. Find a friend and do the workshop together.

A hallmark of the Positive Discipline workshops (and classes) is experiential activities. Role-playing is the most profound way to learn, not only in your head, but also in your heart and gut. Participating in experiential activities and role-playing is the best way to “get into the child’s world” to understand what children are thinking, feeling, and deciding in response to the discipline methods used with them. How else can we really understand the long-term effects of discipline methods? Even parents who initially resist role-playing soon discover how much more they learn when they participate (or at least watch others role-playing). They soon give up their resistance and enjoy the fun and deep learning from experiential activities.

Another hallmark of Positive Discipline workshops is how much participants learn from each other. You will learn how to avoid long lectures and invite participants to share what they are learning from “getting into the child’s world” through the experiential activities. The insights they share with each other is much more meaningful and heartfelt than any lectures they could hear from “experts.”

Another great hallmark of Positive Discipline parenting classes that you will learn is the Parents Helping Parents Problem-Solving-Steps. During each parenting class, a volunteer parent shares a specific challenge with a child and you, the facilitator, lead the parent through a 14 step process that includes role-playing to “get into the child’s world,” and involves the whole group to brainstorm for solutions. This is very empowering to everyone one. The volunteer then chooses one suggestion and role-plays practicing it, or being the child to experience what the suggestion “feels” like to the child. This soon becomes the favorite part of every parenting class where all the Positive Discipline tools come together for practical application for “real” challenges.

The disadvantage is that video training cannot provide the same energy as participating in a live workshop.

The advantages are:

      find one that will.

<isc:description>
Hundreds of schools use these amazingly effective strategies for
restoring order and civility to today's turbulent classrooms. Now you
too can use this philosophy as a foundation for fostering cooperation,
problem-solving skills, and mutual respect in children. Imagine, instead
of controlling behavior, you can be teaching; instead of confronting
apathy, you will enjoy motivated, eager students!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Understand motivations for misbehavior and how to respectfully encourage change in ways that eliminates most discipline problems.

Be able to identify the four mistaken beliefs that lead to misbehavior.

Learn how to encourage students and set limits using kindness and firmness at the same time.

Learn tools to effectively lead a classroom based on cooperation and mutual respect instead of control.

Learn how to teach students the Eight Building Blocks for effective class meetings.

Learn how to teach life skills (self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation, problem solving etc) so that students can cooperate and learn successfully in the classroom.

Learn a useful set of problem solving steps for really "tough" problems.

Have a deeper understanding of human behavior and what motivates positive change.

Have a set of resource materials for future reference.

In addition to this course, our Positive Discipline Associates offer whole school trainings and whole school follow-ups to give you continued educational support. Call for an associate near you.

TOOLS:
The workshop is full of useful tools for use in various school settings that help students practice the skills in situations relevant to them. Class meetings provide an invaluable structure for teaching students the skills they need to work together to solve problems, to be respectful to others, and to make school an engaging place to learn.

EXPERIENTIAL FOCUS
Research confirms that we learn more deeply and internalize change more successfully when actively practicing the principles we are learning. Participants will learn to lead experiential activities, demonstrations, and role plays that help students internalize cooperation, mutual respect, a sense of capability, and a desire to contribute. All activities are designed to help participants leave the workshop prepared to implement the three criteria for discipline that empowers:
1. Respectful
2. Effective Long-Term
3. Provides opportunities for the development of social and life skills

<isc:description>A Positive Approach To Helping Children With Special Needs Realize Their Potential
Every
child deserves to lead a happy and fulfilling life. For parents and
teachers of children with special needs, helping their child to not only
negotiate daily challenges, but to live fulfilling, meaningful lives,
can be the most difficult challenge they will face.

Over the
years, millions of parents and teachers have come to trust Jane Nelsens
classic Positive Discipline series for its consistent, commonsense
approach to childrearing. Now, the bestselling series addresses the
specific challenges that parents and teachers of children with special
needs face, and offers them straightforward advice for supporting them
in positive ways. In these pages are practical solutions to challenges
such as:

Learning to look beyond diagnostic labels

Believing in
each child's potential regardless of his/her stage of development

Helping children integrate socially and interact with their peers

Coping with the frustration that inevitably occurs when a child is being
difficult

Strengthening a childs sense of belonging and significance

And Many More!

Use this book to answer such questions as:

How do you accommodate a disability, while still teaching a child to try their best?

How
do you help a child cope with anger they may have trouble expressing,
especially when that anger may on some level be justified?

How
do you teach a child who may struggle with seemingly straight forward
tasks to contribute to the world around them in a way that will be
meaningful to them?

If you are raising or teaching a child with special needs, this book is a must-read.
As the mother of a child with autism, my hopes and dreams for my son
were no different than those of other parents. I wanted a parenting
approach that helped my child grow up to be self confident, happy, and
prepared for success in relationships, work, and life. I also needed
practical, effective methods for addressing the significant, challenging
behaviors I faced on a daily basis. Finally, in this amazing book, I
found both.Thank you, thank you, thank you to the authors of this groundbreaking book. - Rachel Fink Parks, MS, PCC

excuses for him, and under- estimating his abilities. Furthermore, I had not
put him in the boat with my other child. I had somehow arrived at believing
that he did in fact have special needswhen, really, he has the very same
needs as all children: to belong and to feel significant. Reading this book
helped me to realize that I rarely (if ever) asked my son how he was feeling.
Now I do that as common practice. The culture of autism is a real thing, and
our family battles against its grip daily. If autism threatens to impair his
ability to communicate and interact, we push back. But my son should not be a
casualty in that game of tug-of-war. This book asks us to project thirty years
into the future and imagine the child as an adult. In completing the exercise,
I examined my own wishes: What do I want? Your book provided my response: I
want him to belong and to feel significant. I cant control autism, and I
cant make promises for a future that is not my own. However, I can work on
those wishes now and ensure that my son feels important and loved and heard
every day. And this will no longer be done by pampering him or making excuses,
but by encouraging him to ask for help, to stretch his boundaries, to have even
higher expectations for what I know he can accomplish, and to love him
unconditionallynot because he is my child with special needs but because he is
my child.

innocent. We learn that the very behavior that is causing power struggles and
